CEO World Magazine’s “Executive Spotlight: Greg Blatt”, discussed how Blatt was able to capitalize on a burgeoning industry and ensure its sustained relevance in the ever-changing tech world.
Greg Blatt is the CEO of Match Group, which owns Tinder. Greg Blatt may be one of the most powerful people in online dating.
Match Group has also acquired OkCupid and PlentyOfFish, making it a leading player in online dating with an estimated revenue of $888 million dollars annually.
Blatt is responsible for the development, operation, and commercial success of all dating products, including Tinder’s monetization strategy. The company has been valued at $3 billion dollars. However, it faces increasing competition from rival apps like Bumble.
Blatt considers himself the “King of the Nerds”. He was hired to take over the company after his predecessor Sam Yagan had to resign due to a conflict of interest caused by investment in another dating site.
Yagan went on to found the rival app The League, which is known for its extremely selective vetting process.
Before Greg Blatt took over as CEO, he was known as the “Wunderkind” of online dating. He got the job because of his record with Match.com, where he worked as CEO for 11 years and grew revenues from $0 to $800 million during that time.
Match.com was also one of the first online dating websites ever created in 1995, making it one of the oldest still-functioning ones on the internet today.
Match Group owns many dating services, including Match.com, Tinder, OkCupid, and PlentyOfFish among others. It is valued at $3 billion dollars. Yagan holds the exact same position within the company as Blatt used to hold (CEO). In 2015 an investment fund of undisclosed size was raised from investors such as Sequoia and Technology Crossover Ventures. Match Group has been growing year on year by about 100 million dollars, while also increasing its number of paying subscribers from 2.9 to 3.6 million since Yagan’s departure in 2011. Yagan went on to found his own rival dating app called The League (app). See related link to learn more.
